About Us

The Full Story

Hides for Heroes began its journey in 2013, under the guidance of Dave Hintz, a man with a
heart as big as the Wisconsin skies. Having graduated from butcher school years ago, Dave
mastered the art of deer cutting, but it was his children's involvement in sports that sparked the
flame of inspiration.

With uniforms and equipment always in demand for the teams, Dave found a unique way to lend
a helping hand. He began saving the deer hides from his cutting business, seeing them not just as
byproducts, but as opportunities to make a difference. Selling these hides to a local buyer, Dave
channeled the proceeds back to the school, ensuring that no child's sporting dreams went
unfunded.

Even as his own children moved on from high school, Dave's commitment to giving back
remained steadfast. Learning of Camp Hackett in Philips, Wisconsin, which provided outdoor
experiences for Purple Heart veterans, Dave saw a new avenue for his generosity. Donating the
hides to Wounded Warriors in Action, who in turn supported Camp Hackett, Dave expanded his
mission to honor those who served.

As word spread, Dave's humble initiative blossomed into Hides for Heroes, a beacon of
community support. With the backing of his employer, The Waupaca Foundry, wooden boxes
were scattered throughout the area, inviting local hunters and meat cutters to contribute their
hides. A dedicated team of volunteers diligently processed the hides, preparing them for sale
when the market was ripe.

Lee Christenson, the Owner of North American Fly manufacturer based in Strum, Wisconsin,
caught wind of Dave's team and their remarkable achievements, prompting him to extend a
helping hand. Lee generously proposed a contract to purchase the hides collected, thus providing
invaluable support to the cause. In addition to this crucial partnership, Lee's business went above
and beyond by donating pallets and salt essential for the processing of deer hides. They also
donated custom-made gloves adorned with the Hides For Heroes logo, adding a personal touch
to their contribution. Moreover, they graciously offered to handle the pickup of hides from our
salt fields, alleviating our team of the burden of storage and delivery expenses. Lee's
contributions proved instrumental in streamlining our operations and maximizing its’ impact in
the community.

In 2023, Hides for Heroes reached new heights, achieving corporate status and nonprofit
designation. What began with 262 deer hides in 2013 had grown into a remarkable endeavor,
with 5,134 hides collected and sold the previous year alone. The impact was tangible, with
$34,000 donated to Camp Hackett in 2023, and a staggering $186,000 contributed to date.
Hides for Heroes didn't stop there. Dave and his team embarked on an annual golf outing
fundraiser, gathering the community for a day of camaraderie and support. Additionally, they
were entrusted with the reins of the well-established Bucks Unlimited Gun Raffle, further

expanding their fundraising efforts. The proceeds from these events flowed generously, not only
to Camp Hackett but also to local law enforcement, emergency services, and veterans groups.
This widespread impact served as a testament to the gratitude felt by all involved, reflecting the
profound unity and appreciation within the community.

Dave's vision had surpassed all expectations, touching countless lives and leaving an indelible
mark on the community. As they looked ahead to another year of fundraising and support, there
was no doubt that Hides for Heroes would continue to shine brightly, a beacon of hope and
gratitude for all who crossed its path.
